The possibility is growing that the 'Centrist Reform Alliance', a Japanese political organization, will split just over six months after its formation. Following the shelving of a merger with the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, lawmakers originally from Komeito, who form the majority within the party, have begun coordinating their departure from the party.
On August 28, the Constitutional Democratic Party decided to abandon the three-party merger with the Centrist Reform Alliance and Komeito. Along with this, executives of the Centrist Reform Alliance are advancing full-scale discussions regarding the method of departure for ex-Komeito lawmakers. Specifically, proposals being raised include 'party splitting'—dividing the party into two—or having Komeito-affiliated members leave individually and return to Komeito. A final policy is expected to be confirmed at the three-party leaders' summit scheduled for August 31.
The Centrist Reform Alliance was formed in January 2026 when House of Representatives members from Komeito and the Constitutional Democratic Party gathered. Currently, among its 49 House of Representatives members, 28 are originally from Komeito and 21 are from the Constitutional Democratic Party. However, triggered by a major defeat in the House of Representatives election in February of the same year, caution regarding the merger rapidly intensified, primarily around local organizations of the Constitutional Democratic Party. With the unified local elections in spring 2027 and the House of Councillors election in 2028 approaching, negotiations stalled due to differences in expectations and struggles for leadership between both sides, evolving into the current split.
