The American fast-food chain Chipotle is opening its very first restaurant in Mexico this week. The company, which is famous for its customizable burritos, tacos, and bowls, has more than 4,100 restaurants around the world. However, this new step is a major test because Mexico is the country that inspired Chipotle's menu.
Opening an American version of a local food in its home country is often difficult. In the past, similar attempts by other US food chains have failed. For example, Taco Bell no longer has any restaurants in Mexico, and Domino's Pizza had to close its locations in Italy. On social media, many people have already mocked Chipotle's decision to enter the Mexican market.
Despite the challenges, Chipotle’s boss, Scott Boatwright, said the company is entering Mexico with great respect for the country's food history.
The first restaurant is located in the northeastern state of Nuevo León, close to the border with Texas. Chipotle plans to use this location to see how well it performs before opening more restaurants in the state. If it is successful, the company plans to expand into Mexico City in 2027 by working with Alsea, a large Mexican restaurant operator that also runs Starbucks and Chili's in the country.
