Sam Neill, the beloved New Zealand actor who achieved global fame for dodging dinosaurs in the blockbuster Jurassic Park and starring in acclaimed dramas like The Piano, has died at the age of 78.
According to a statement posted to his social media page, Neill passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia. His family shared that he was surrounded by loved ones and died with dignity. Although Neill was diagnosed in 2023 with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, his family noted that he remained cancer-free at the time of his death, describing his passing as "sudden and unexpected."
Neill’s acting career spanned over five decades, moving seamlessly between independent art films and major Hollywood blockbusters. He was best known for his role as the thoughtful paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 1993 hit Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in later sequels, including Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022. Beyond his Hollywood successes, Neill was a key figure in the rise of Australian and New Zealander cinema in the late 1970s, starring in classics such as My Brilliant Career and the thriller Dead Calm alongside a young Nicole Kidman.
In addition to his film achievements, Neill was highly regarded for his television work, notably playing the antagonist Chester Campbell in the hit British drama Peaky Blinders.
Outside of acting, Neill was known in his home country of New Zealand as a modest and down-to-earth person who preferred a quiet life. He ran a successful winery called Two Paddocks in the South Island of New Zealand and frequently shared humorous updates about his farm animals on social media. In recognition of his massive contribution to the film industry, he was awarded a knighthood.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid tribute to Neill, calling him "one of the greats" who helped shape the nation’s film industry from its early days. Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.
