A large bison attacked a 65-year-old grandfather in Yellowstone National Park on Friday evening.

Carl Isom-McDaniel and his grandson were walking near Bridge Bay Campground. They stopped to take a photo of a bison lying in the grass. Suddenly, the 900-kilogram animal stood up and ran toward them.

The grandfather and grandson tried to escape by running through some trees. However, the bison caught the grandfather. The animal hit him with its horn and threw him into the air.

The grandfather suffered several injuries and went to a hospital. A witness said the grandfather was in a lot of pain but was still in good spirits and telling jokes.

National Park officials warn visitors to stay at least 23 meters (25 yards) away from bison. Bison look calm, but they can run three times faster than humans. Experts also say that bison are more dangerous and unpredictable in July because it is their mating season.
