A yellow football shirt worn by the famous Brazilian player Pele has sold for a record-breaking $4.9 million at an auction in New York.

worn by= 〜によって着用された

Pele wore this shirt during the 1958 World Cup final when he was only 17 years old. In that historic game, he scored two goals to help Brazil beat Sweden 5-2. It was Brazil's first World Cup victory. Pele, who died in 2022, is still the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.

when he was only= わずか〜歳のときに

The auction house, Sotheby’s, said the shirt received 10 bids from more than five people. The shirt is very famous because of the historic match. In 2004, the same shirt was sold for only $105,600.

While $4.9 million is a record for Pele's items, it is not the most expensive sports clothing ever sold. A baseball jersey worn by Babe Ruth in 1932 sold for $24.1 million in 2024. Michael Jordan's basketball jersey sold for $10.1 million, and Diego Maradona's football shirt sold for $9.2 million.
