A famous Cuban artist and activist, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, has arrived in the United States after spending five years in a Cuban prison. He was released on the condition that he leave his home country and go into exile.

on the condition that= 〜という条件で

Alcántara, 38, arrived at Miami International Airport on Saturday, July 18, 2026. A large crowd of supporters greeted him with cheers and songs. They draped him in a Cuban flag printed with the words "Patria y Vida" ("Homeland and Life"), a song that became an anthem for Cuba's political opposition. Alcántara shared a Grammy Award for the song, which protests the government's repression.

The artist co-founded the San Isidro Movement, a group of writers, artists, and musicians in Havana who speak out against government control. In July 2021, Alcántara was arrested during a public protest. A court later sentenced him to five years in prison for public disorder and disrespecting national symbols.

Human rights groups like Amnesty International and the U.S. government denounced his imprisonment, calling him a political prisoner. Although he was scheduled for release, his supporters did not know where he was for several days until he finally boarded the plane to Miami.

His supporters hope his release will help free other political prisoners in Cuba, including his friend and fellow artist Maykel "Osorbo" Castillo Pérez, who is still in prison. Upon arriving, Alcántara carried a broken statue of the Virgin Mary, which he described as a symbol of hope and healing—a chance to put something back together from fragments.
