After eating a simple beef sausage on a camping trip, a teenager in Australia suffered a severe allergic reaction and died. A coroner later ruled that his fatal attack was triggered by mammalian meat allergy (MMA), a condition caused by tick bites. It is believed to be the first death in the world recorded from this allergy.

MMA, also known as alpha-gal syndrome, occurs when a tick bite transfers a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the human body. In response, some people develop antibodies to the molecule. Afterwards, eating red meat or mammal-derived products can trigger allergic reactions ranging from stomach cramps and vomiting to severe breathing difficulties and life-threatening anaphylaxis.

The condition was first linked to tick bites nearly 20 years ago by an Australian doctor, Professor Sheryl van Nunen. In Australia, the allergy is mainly caused by the eastern paralysis tick. Cases are also common in the United States and have been reported across all six continents where ticks live.

Diagnosing MMA remains a major challenge. Symptoms often appear hours after eating, usually at night, making it easy to confuse with asthma or simple food intolerances. For extremely sensitive individuals, even inhaling barbecue fumes or touching pet hair can trigger a reaction.

Experts warn that cases of MMA are rising rapidly, with suspected cases increasing by more than 20% each year in Australia. Doctors and health campaigners are urging the public to take tick bites seriously and seek testing early if unusual symptoms appear after eating meat.
