The expanded feature allows users aged 18 and older on both free and paid subscription plans to integrate personal health data from healthcare providers and popular health apps such as Apple Health, Weight Watchers, MyFitnessPal, and Function. Users can ask ChatGPT detailed questions about their medications, post-visit notes, and care team recommendations directly within their standard conversation thread without needing to switch to a separate health tab.
The announcement arrives alongside bold statements and ongoing debates regarding artificial intelligence in healthcare. During a press briefing, Ashley Alexander, OpenAI's vice president of health product, stated that the company's newest models—powered by GPT-5.6 Sol—are "capable of reasoning at levels that are better than clinician level." However, OpenAI health lead Karan Singhal tempered this claim, acknowledging that while individual academic studies from institutions like Harvard and Stanford point in that direction, AI is designed to support medical professionals rather than replace them.
Privacy and safety remain major focal points for the rollout. OpenAI emphasized that health information connected to the service receives enhanced encryption both at rest and in transit, and ChatGPT will explicitly ask for permission before accessing health data to personalize responses. The launch also comes amidst real-world scrutiny; recently, a Florida pastor filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that dangerous medical advice from the chatbot led him to delay treatment for a pulmonary embolism.
