Australian swimmer Lani Pallister won her country's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. She won the women's 400-meter freestyle race after overcoming years of health problems and disappointment.
Pallister finished the race in 3 minutes and 59.56 seconds. She was the only swimmer in the final to finish in less than four minutes. Erika Fairweather of New Zealand won the silver medal, and Australia's Jenna Forrester took the bronze.
The victory was especially meaningful for the 24-year-old swimmer. In 2021, Pallister needed heart surgery and suffered from an eating disorder. Later, COVID-19 impacted her performance at the Paris Olympics. Her mother, Janelle Elford, was also a famous Commonwealth Games swimmer who won three medals.
"Without all the ups and downs, I wouldn't be the person or the athlete that I am today," Pallister said after her race.
Pallister's victory started a strong night for Australian swimming. Shortly after taking bronze in the 400-meter freestyle, Jenna Forrester surprised fans by winning gold in the women's 200-meter backstroke. Australia also won gold in both the women's and men's 4x100-meter freestyle relays, bringing their total to six gold medals on the opening day in the pool.
