People across the UK are spending 15 minutes outdoors this summer to count butterflies and day-flying moths in their local parks and gardens. This simple activity helps scientists understand how warm weather and climate change are affecting local wildlife.

spend [time] [verb-ing]= 〜するのに[時間]を過ごす

The survey is called the Big Butterfly Count, organized by the charity Butterfly Conservation. It runs until August 9, and anyone can take part. Participants just need to sit in a green space for 15 minutes and record the insects they see.

Scientists need help from the public because about 80 percent of UK butterfly species have declined over the past 50 years. Habitat loss, pollution, and climate change are making it hard for many species to survive.

make it + adj + for [someone] to [verb]= [誰か]が〜するのを困難にする

Local councils, such as Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) in southern England, are asking residents to visit local heathlands and meadows. These areas host important species, including the rare Silver-studded Blue, the Large Skipper, and the Peacock butterfly.

Experts say it is too early to know if this summer will be good for butterflies, even after a warm spring. People can submit their sightings easily through the free Big Butterfly Count mobile application or on the official website.
