A 16-year-old rookie lifeguard became a hero after saving a young boy at a beach in California.

become a hero after V-ing= 〜した後にヒーローになる

Ryder Williams was working at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz when a 10-year-old boy was swept away by the ocean. The strong water carried the child about 15 yards (13.7 meters) offshore.

be swept away= (流される力で)押し流される

Williams quickly swam out to reach the boy. A bystander captured the dramatic rescue on video as several beachgoers also joined to help. The entire operation lasted just over two minutes, and the boy was safely brought back to shore.

After the brave rescue, President Donald Trump invited Williams to the White House to receive a high civilian honour.
