Rare baby pine martens, called kits, have been born in South West England. This is exciting news for nature lovers because pine martens disappeared from the area more than 100 years ago after being hunted to extinction.
Pine martens are small, tree-climbing animals in the weasel family. In 2024, conservationists began a special project to bring them back and released 15 pine martens into the wild. One year later, remote cameras captured images of the new baby kits.
The project succeeded with help from the local community. Residents helped build artificial nest boxes and regularly checked cameras placed around the forest. Field officer Ali North said the team was thrilled to finally see the kits after many months of monitoring.
Pine martens are shy animals and difficult to spot. Conservationists say that while the new births are a fantastic sign, the recovery of pine martens in the region is still in its early and fragile stage.
