Playing an iconic villain is never easy, especially when famous actors have already played the role before. Spanish actor Javier Bardem recently shared how he approached playing the classic villain Max Cady in the new Apple TV series Cape Fear.
At first, Bardem hesitated to accept the role. Famous actors Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro had already delivered famous performances as Max Cady in earlier film versions. However, when Bardem learned that legendary director Martin Scorsese was returning as an executive producer for the show, he decided to take on the challenge.
In Cape Fear, Max Cady is a man who was convicted of killing his pregnant wife. After leaving prison, he seeks revenge against the lawyers he blames for his conviction. Bardem wanted to bring his own interpretation to the character instead of copying previous actors. He focused on the character's mindset, explaining that Cady is fearless because he has already lost everything. Bardem added that he enjoys playing villains because they offer complex emotions, and his goal is always to humanize them rather than judge them.
Beyond his acting work, Bardem also spoke about his public support for Palestinian rights. Although speaking out has created some challenges for his career in Hollywood, he explained that working in Spain gives him the independence to express his beliefs freely. As the season finale of Cape Fear streams on Apple TV, Bardem says he feels encouraged by the support he receives from fans around the world.
