A leaked copy of the new movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day appeared online and was watched millions of times. However, the film is still setting big box office records in theaters.
The bootleg video stayed on the social media platform X for more than seven hours before it was taken down. During that time, it reached over 5.9 million accounts and received more than 143,000 likes. Disney is now sending requests to take down other reposts online.
Despite the leak, many fans are still buying tickets. The movie earned $72 million during its preview screenings this week. It broke the previous preview record of $60 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
With preview and opening day tickets combined, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already grossed $168 million, surpassing the $157.4 million earned by Endgame in the same period. Sony estimates the film could pull in $325 million over its opening weekend.
