Next time you chat with an online assistant or scroll past a hyper-realistic image on social media, new visual labels will make it clear whether you are interacting with a real human or an algorithm. Under landmark European Union regulations that came into force on August 2, tech companies must now explicitly inform users when they are exposed to AI-generated content or synthetic media.

came into force= (法律・規制などが)施行された

The new transparency obligations under the EU’s landmark AI Act distinguish between two main categories: providers who build and market AI systems, and deployers who integrate those systems into existing services. Providers are required to design AI tools that notify users when they are communicating with an AI model—unless that fact is already obvious—and embed machine-readable metadata into synthetic text, audio, images, and video. Meanwhile, deployers must clearly label realistic deepfakes to prevent users from being misled.

distinguish between= 〜と〜を区別する

According to the European Commission, the rapid evolution of generative AI has made it increasingly difficult for the public to separate authentic human creations from artificial ones. European officials emphasized that clear disclosure is necessary so that citizens can calibrate their trust, evaluate information critically, and protect themselves against online deception and misinformation.

protect ... against= 〜から…を守る

To help companies adapt to the regulations, the European Commission introduced a standardized set of visual disclosure icons. While tech platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok already employ similar labels, the official EU icons serve as a standardized template. Although using the specific design of the EU icons remains optional, officials explicitly noted that complying with the labeling mandate itself is strictly mandatory.

Tech firms that fail to meet these transparency standards face heavy financial penalties, including fines of up to €15 million (approximately $17.2 million) or 3 percent of their global annual revenue. While newly launched AI products must comply with the rules immediately, services and models introduced before August 2 have been granted a four-month grace period until December 2 to come into compliance.
