Artificial intelligence may be stepping into a domain long considered uniquely human: creative story-telling. According to a new study published in the journal Judgment and Decision Making, readers consistently rated short stories written by ChatGPT as more engaging and higher in overall quality than those authored by humans.

stepping into= (新しい分野や役割に)進出する

Researchers at Villanova University in Pennsylvania recruited 1,682 adults to evaluate short fiction across matching themes. Half of the participants read stories created by ChatGPT, while the other half read human-written works selected from a literary journal. When asked to score story quality on a scale from -3 to +3, participants awarded AI-generated tales an average score of 1.54, compared to 0.97 for human-authored works. AI stories were also judged to be significantly more absorbing.

Interestingly, the study revealed that readers' expectations played a strong role in their enjoyment. Participants rated stories slightly higher whenever they were told the text came from a human author, even when that label was false. Furthermore, in follow-up tests where participants attempted to identify which text was written by a person and which by AI, they guessed correctly only about half the time—demonstrating that most people cannot reliably distinguish AI literature from human writing.

Experts suggest the preference for AI stories may stem from their accessibility. Creative writing scholars noted that published literary fiction can be dense and demanding for general readers. In contrast, AI models tend to produce smoother, more predictable narratives that are easier to digest. Senior author Dr. Deena Skolnick Weisberg described AI output as more "vanilla," but noted that its readability gives it a clear edge in broad appeal.

stem from= 〜に由来する、〜に原因がある

Despite these findings, the growing role of AI in creative fields has sparked sharp debate. Critics point out that AI models generate text using predictive algorithms trained on massive databases of human work, raising serious ethical and artistic concerns. Nevertheless, while researchers emphasize that human writing will always remain vital for personal self-expression, the study indicates that AI-generated fiction is rapidly gaining acceptance among general audiences.
