Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared her intention to return home from exile in India this December, defying a death sentence issued in absentia by a Dhaka tribunal for crimes against humanity. Speaking via audio broadcast to journalists at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia in New Delhi, the 78-year-old former leader delivered her first public address since being ousted two years ago following a violent anti-government uprising.
"Whatever fate awaits me, I will return to my people," Hasina stated during the address marking the second anniversary of her downfall. Acknowledging the personal risk involved, she added, "I may be detained, I may be sent to prison, they may try to enforce verdicts issued in fabricated cases, but fear cannot decide my duty to the people."
Hasina fled Dhaka by helicopter in August 2024 as tens of thousands of demonstrators stormed government buildings, bringing an end to her 15-year tenure. The student-led protests, which initially erupted over government job quotas, swiftly transformed into a broad uprising against her regime's increasingly authoritarian control. According to United Nations estimates, nearly 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown, predominantly by security forces using lethal force.
During her address, Hasina denied all allegations of wrongdoing, instead characterizing the 2024 unrest as a "coordinated assault on the constitutional order" driven by hidden instructions and propaganda. However, independent analysts and international investigators have rejected her portrayal of events. UN findings documented systematic violence deployed by state machinery under her direct authority, while prosecutors in Dhaka utilized verified audio recordings of Hasina authorising lethal action as pivotal evidence in her conviction.
Her presence in India continues to strain diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Dhaka. Following the press event, Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry expressed deep regret and outrage that India permitted Hasina to conduct a public press briefing, reiterating demands for her extradition. Since her departure, an interim administration governed until general elections in February brought the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to power under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Political observers emphasize that a potential return by Hasina carries significant consequences for the region. Because her conviction stands without appeal, she faces immediate arrest as a fugitive upon landing in Bangladesh, a development likely to trigger massive demonstrations by rival political parties, student groups, and Islamists demanding her sentence be executed. Conversely, figures within her banned Awami League party maintain that her physical return is essential if the movement hopes to retain any future political relevance.
