A Rare Serbian Eagle Rescued from Poachers Returns to the Wild

A rare eastern imperial eagle named Feliks is flying free once again in Serbia after surviving months in captivity.

Feliks first left his nest in July 2025. Conservation experts tracked his journey as he flew south toward the Middle East. In October, his tracking signal suddenly went silent. At first, experts thought the device had failed, but they soon discovered that poachers in Syria had captured the young bird and put him up for sale.

The poachers demanded a ransom for the eagle, but officials refused to pay it. After long negotiations, rescuers moved Feliks to a wildlife center in Beirut, Lebanon, where he spent over six months recovering. Finally, a Serbian military airplane brought the bird back to his home country.

Feliks's safe return is a major success for wildlife protection. Eastern imperial eagles are critically endangered, but conservation efforts have helped Serbia's population grow from just one pair in 2017 to 29 pairs today.
