Somosierra, a quiet mountain village in Spain with just 93 residents, is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for a rare celestial event. On August 12, a total solar eclipse will pass over northern and eastern Spain, marking the first total solar eclipse seen in the region in more than 120 years.

mark the first ... in more than [time]= 長期間で初めてとなる歴史的な節目を示す表現

Located about an hour's drive north of Madrid, Somosierra sits at an altitude of 1,440 meters. It is considered one of the best locations near the Spanish capital to view the phenomenon. Visitors at the site will experience one minute and 29 seconds of totality, during which the moon will completely block the sun.

Although the village council created 400 official registration spots, local officials expect up to 2,000 people to arrive on the day. The sudden interest has raised practical questions for the small community, including where visitors will park, whether there will be enough drinking water, and how local restaurants will feed the crowd.

expect up to [number] to [verb]= 最大で〜に達すると見込む表現

To manage the influx, local authorities are organizing volunteers to guide visitors and ensure safety. A specialized astrotourism company, El Nocturnario, recently held a workshop in the village to teach volunteers about event logistics and how to view the eclipse safely using protective glasses.

hold a workshop= 講習会や研修会を開催する

The August event is part of a series of rare astronomical events coming to Spain. Another total solar eclipse will occur in August 2027, followed by an annular "ring of fire" eclipse in January 2028. The Spanish government expects the upcoming eclipse to attract over 440,000 international visitors and generate more than €340 million in tourism revenue.
