Millions of people across Europe are getting ready to watch a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday evening. This is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe in over 20 years.

get ready to= 〜の準備をする

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun. The Moon blocks the Sun's light and casts a shadow on the Earth. During the total eclipse, the sky becomes dark for a short time, and people can see the Sun's bright outer atmosphere, called the corona.

People in parts of Spain, Portugal, Greenland, and Iceland will be able to see the total eclipse. In Spain, half a million visitors are traveling to places like Bilbao, Valencia, and Palma to see the Sun completely covered. In cities like Madrid and Barcelona, the Moon will cover more than 99 percent of the Sun. The total eclipse will peak between 8:26 p.m. and 8:33 p.m. local time, shortly before sunset.

Other places in Western Europe, including the UK, France, and Italy, will see a partial solar eclipse. In London, the Moon will cover about 92 percent of the Sun, while parts of western Scotland and Cornwall will see even more coverage.

Safety is very important during a solar eclipse. Experts warn that looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent eye damage. People should always wear special eclipse glasses or use a pinhole projector to watch the event safely.

For many people in Europe, this eclipse is a rare and exciting moment. In the UK, the next total solar eclipse will not happen until the year 2090.

not... until= 〜まで…しない(〜になって初めて…する)
