PSG took the lead early in the match when forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the 20th minute. However, Aston Villa fought back right before half-time. 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo scored a side-footed volley to equalize at 1-1. Madjo was making his official debut for Villa after winning an appeal to be registered for competition. With his goal, he became the youngest player to start and score in a UEFA Super Cup match.

Aston Villa created late scoring chances in the second half, but PSG defended well to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

The game also made history with Somali referee Omar Artan, who became the first non-European official to referee a UEFA Super Cup final.

The victory marks the first of a possible six trophies this season for PSG under manager Luis Enrique.
