Centuries before Roman legions invaded Britain in AD 43, the people of northeast England built communities where women held central positions of social power and family continuity. A massive new genetic study of more than 500 ancient skeletons has revealed that Iron Age clans traced their descent through the female line for up to nine generations, challenging long-held assumptions about ancient European history.
The research team, led by archaeologist Ian Armit at the University of York, sequenced DNA from individuals associated with the Iron Age Arras culture, primarily excavated from Wetwang Slack in Yorkshire. The genetic analysis demonstrated a distinct social pattern known as matrilocality: women remained in their ancestral home communities throughout their lives, while men moved between settlements. Women were buried alongside their mothers and female relatives, whereas fathers were frequently absent from local burial grounds.
The genetic evidence also showed that at least twelve women had children with multiple male partners, which may reflect serial monogamy or polyandrous arrangements where women maintained relationships with multiple husbands. Crucially, community members avoided having children with close relatives from the same maternal line across hundreds of years. This indicates that Iron Age people possessed detailed knowledge of their maternal ancestry across generations to maintain social alliances between specific female clans.
The only exceptions to this outbreeding pattern were elite individuals given lavish chariot burials, whose DNA revealed close kin unions designed to concentrate high status within a restricted descent group. Combined with historical accounts of powerful leaders like Queen Boudica and archaeological evidence of women in combat, researchers say these findings demonstrate that female-line descent was a fundamental organizing principle of British Iron Age society.
