A rare artwork by Pablo Picasso that was stolen eight years ago has finally returned to its owner in Milwaukee.
In 2018, art gallery owner Bill DeLind was heartbroken when thieves stole a valuable Picasso print from his shop. He believed the artwork was gone forever. However, police recently called DeLind with surprising news: a landlord had discovered the print while cleaning a vacant apartment.
The landlord, Tim Dertz, was clearing out an apartment after an eviction when he saw a dusty picture hanging on the wall. He showed it to a friend who collects antiques. The friend recognized it as a genuine Picasso piece and remembered the 2018 theft. Dertz quickly handed the artwork over to local police.
When DeLind inspected the piece, he recognized it immediately. The print, titled Torero, is one of only 30 signed by Picasso. The appraisal sticker from DeLind's gallery was still attached to the back of the frame.
The artwork was valued between $35,000 and $50,000 when it was stolen. DeLind believes the unique story may make it worth even more today.
DeLind said his former business partner, who passed away earlier this year, used to call the police every year on the anniversary of the theft. Although his partner did not live to see its return, DeLind feels overwhelmed with joy that the print has finally come back.
