Thirty years ago, a simple video game about collecting pocket-sized monsters arrived on Nintendo's Game Boy in Japan. Today, Pokémon has grown from a schoolyard trend into one of the largest media franchises in history, bringing together generations of fans across the globe.

bring together= 〜を結びつける、団結させる

Created by game designer Satoshi Tajiri and developed by his company Game Freak, the original games invited players to explore the fictional Kanto region, catching and training 151 unique creatures. The Game Boy titles became an instant sensation, eventually selling more than 400 million copies worldwide. When the animated television series and games expanded internationally in the late 1990s, "Pokémania" quickly captured the imagination of children everywhere.

As the craze spread, it also created intense public debate among adults and news outlets. In 1999, the launch of the Pokémon Trading Card Game generated enormous excitement on school playgrounds, with Australian fans alone spending 11 million dollars in the first two months. Concerns over playground disputes led some media reports to warn of a dangerous craze, and many schools moved to ban the trading cards. At some schools, passionate students even organized sit-in protests to defend their favorite creatures to school principals.

move to V= 〜するために行動を起こす、〜し始める

Behind the initial adult worry, Pokémon offered a powerful way for young people to connect. To complete their collections, players had to interact, cooperate, and trade with each other. Over three decades, the franchise has proven that shared enthusiasm can cross international borders and language barriers, turning a childhood pastime into a lasting global phenomenon.

turn A into B= AをBに変える、変化させる
