Teenagers growing up in the digital age are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for help with homework, everyday advice, and conversation. To make these interactions safer, OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Teens, a specialized version of its AI chatbot designed specifically for users aged 13 to 17.

turn to [someone/something]= 援助や助言を求めて〜に頼る

The platform introduces enhanced protections to shield young users from online harms. ChatGPT for Teens includes strict content restrictions that block discussions about self-harm, suicide, and romantic or sexual topics. To prevent teenagers from forming unhealthy emotional attachments to the software, the chatbot is programmed never to suggest it has personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions.

prevent [someone] from [doing something]= 〜が…するのを防ぐ

For schoolwork, the system is designed to encourage genuine learning rather than academic dishonesty. Instead of writing complete essays or giving immediate answers, the AI guides students step-by-step so they can arrive at solutions on their own.

rather than= 〜ではなく、〜というよりは

Parents can link their accounts to set "quiet hours" that block access during specified times, such as bedtime. Linked parents can also receive alerts in high-risk situations, including potential issues related to eating disorders. However, OpenAI stated that core safety restrictions apply to all teen users, even if parental controls are not enabled. The company uses age assurance systems to detect minor users based on their query patterns and automatically move them into the protected teen mode.

even if= たとえ〜であっても

The launch follows growing warnings from educators and child development experts about youth AI usage. A 2025 study by Common Sense Media found that more than 70% of American teenagers have used AI chatbots for companionship. With young brains still developing, advocates hope these new guardrails will help teenagers build healthier relationships with technology.
