Pub-goers in the UK will no longer have to listen to strangers' loud phone calls or videos while enjoying a drink. Wetherspoons, one of the country's largest pub chains, has officially banned customers from playing music out loud and taking calls on speakerphones across its 792 locations.

The company introduced the new rule after receiving numerous complaints from visitors. Management explained that noise from smartphones and tablets had become a growing problem that was driving customers "nuts." Under the new policy, staff are asking customers to switch their electronic devices to silent mode or use headphones.

drive someone nuts= 人をイライラさせる、精神的に追い詰める

Sir Tim Martin, the founder and owner of Wetherspoons, described the chain's pubs as "an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation." He kindly asked phone users to "pipe down" so that everyone can enjoy a quiet environment. Staff members have been advised to use common sense when enforcing the rule. While the pub chain does not plan to kick people out immediately, managers have the option to ask customers to leave if they refuse to cooperate.

have the option to= 〜する選択肢[権利]がある

Many customers across London and the rest of the UK have welcomed the announcement. People enjoying drinks outdoors reported that loud speakerphone conversations and video playback in public spaces are antisocial and annoying. Industry representatives also supported the decision, noting that clear rules help create a better atmosphere for everyone.

Wetherspoons is not the only pub business taking action against noisy technology. A rival chain, Sam Smiths, has maintained an even stricter policy for years, banning all phone and screen use in its venues to encourage face-to-face conversation. Wetherspoons has also recently clamped down on other modern habits, including banning smart glasses that can record video discreetly inside pubs.

clamp down on= 〜を厳しく取り締まる・規制する
