A powerful El Niño weather pattern developing in the Pacific Ocean could become the strongest in living memory, raising fears of severe weather worldwide and already forcing major restrictions along one of the world's most critical shipping lanes.
Scientists warn that sea surface temperatures in the central tropical Pacific are already more than 2°C above normal. Deeper in the ocean, water temperatures at a depth of 100 meters are up to 8°C above average, acting as a massive heat reservoir that could supercharge the phenomenon. The UK Met Office projects that sea surface temperature anomalies could exceed 3°C later this year as El Niño reaches its peak. This would mark an unprecedented level since modern record-keeping began in 1950, and some scientists suggest it could potentially become the strongest El Niño event in centuries.
The impending weather shift is already impacting global trade. The Panama Canal Authority announced it will restrict daily vessel transits starting in early September due to expected drought conditions. The canal relies heavily on freshwater from Gatun Lake to operate its lock system, but the lake also provides drinking water to Panama City. To conserve water, daily ship transits will be capped at 34 vessels on September 4, and further reduced to 32 vessels on September 15. The waterway normally accommodates around 40 ships per day and handles roughly 5 percent of global maritime commerce.
Shipping experts caution that transit limits could delay international cargo delivery and raise shipping costs for businesses. Meanwhile, climate scientists warn that as El Niño continues to intensify over the coming months, regions across the globe face heightened risks of severe heatwaves, droughts, and localized flooding.
