When people are trapped under collapsed buildings after an earthquake, getting help to them quickly can mean the difference between life and death. Now, scientists in Australia have turned giant cockroaches into tiny first responders that can navigate dangerous rubble and deliver emergency medical care.
Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales created "paraborgs" by equipping giant burrowing cockroaches with miniature cameras, electronics, and custom medical injectors. While cyborg insects have been used for search and exploration for decades, these new models are designed to directly assist trapped victims before human rescuers can reach them.
In proof-of-concept testing, the paraborgs achieved a 95 percent success rate with close-range injections and completed full navigation and medical delivery tasks 72 percent of the time. The insects are safely anesthetized while electrodes and microchips are fitted, and they continue to live normal lifespans once the harnesses are removed.
Emergency response officers believe this technology could significantly expand the reach of search teams into tight, debris-filled spaces. Researchers hope that specialized swarms of cyborg cockroaches will be deployed in real emergencies within the next five to ten years, while human operators maintain complete control over all critical medical decisions.
