Khamila Sani Ibrahim remembers when playing basketball was a secret dream. Growing up in Kano State in northern Nigeria, girls rarely played organized sports. To get on the court, she had to wait until her family left the house or pretend she was visiting friends.

Today, Ibrahim and many other young Muslim women across northern Nigeria are finding their place in sports. A community initiative called Grassroots To Greatness (G2G) is giving female athletes the chance to train, compete, and build confidence while respecting their cultural and religious values.

Youth sports advocate Jawahir Bello created G2G after noticing how few opportunities existed for girls in the region. The initiative organizes female-only tournaments where players wear custom sports hijabs, long vests, and athletic tights. Bello explains that modesty is central to the project, allowing young women to participate fully without changing who they are.

without + V-ing= 〜することなく

For Ibrahim, joining a multi-state G2G tournament changed everything. Unlike male-dominated local pickup games where girls were often ignored, G2G provided jerseys, equipment, travel coverage, and stipends for all teams. The experience made players feel valued and respected. Another young player, Fatima Diouf from Abuja, said the program taught her essential life lessons like teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence.

Unlike + N= 〜とは違って

Support from families and local communities is also growing. Ibrahim's father was initially worried about competitive sports, but after attending her games and seeing the structured, modest environment, he became one of her biggest supporters.

Now, Ibrahim dreams of earning a college sports scholarship in the United States and playing professionally. More than that, she hopes to inspire other young Muslim girls to pursue their passions, proving that sports and traditional values can go hand in hand.

go hand in hand= 手を取り合う、密接に関連する
