Notting Hill Carnival Begins with Traditional Jab Jab Parade

Hundreds of people gathered at dawn in London to mark the start of the annual Notting Hill Carnival with the traditional Jab Jab parade.

Participants covered their skin in motor oil and wore devil horns as they paraded through the streets early in the morning. The distinctive costumes and energetic performance form a central part of the opening celebrations for the world-famous Caribbean festival.

The Jab Jab masquerade comes from Grenadian tradition. Performers told reporters that continuing the practice in London is an essential way to celebrate their culture, remember their history, and keep Grenadian heritage alive during Notting Hill Carnival.
