European tourists planning a long vacation in Thailand will soon have less time to travel without a visa. Starting September 15, 2026, Thailand will reduce visa-free stays for visitors from European Union countries and over 30 other nations from 60 days down to 30 days.

down to= 〜にまで(減らす・下げる)

Thai officials decided to make this change after several high-profile crimes involving foreigners, including illegal businesses and drug offenses. Although tourism is very important to Thailand and makes up over 10 percent of its economy, the government wants better control over international visitors.

make up= (割合などを)占める、構成する

However, tourists still have options for longer stays. Visitors can ask for a one-time extension from an immigration officer. Remote workers and long-term visitors can also apply for a Destination Thailand Visa, which allows stays of up to 180 days if applicants can show proof of employment and at least 500,000 baht (about 13,000 euros) in savings.

up to= 最大で〜まで

Meanwhile, travelers from a few countries, including Brazil, Peru, and South Korea, will receive longer visa-free stays of 90 days. Thailand has welcomed nearly 21 million foreign tourists this year, but total visitor numbers are still slightly lower than last year.
