Severe summer thunderstorms in late June caused major travel chaos across northern Europe, forcing air traffic controllers to restrict crowded airspace and causing around 900 flights at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports to be delayed by up to 11 hours or cancelled entirely. While temperatures in the region have since cooled, aviation experts warn that such severe disruption could become far more frequent as global climate change destabilises weather systems.
Thunderstorms are driven by convective activity, where warm, moist air rises rapidly and cools to form massive storm clouds. Scientists note that for every degree the Earth warms, the atmosphere can hold roughly 7 percent more moisture, increasing the potential for intense rainfall and storm activity. Higher latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere are expected to see some of the biggest increases in conditions favourable for violent storm activity, posing a direct threat to heavily congested airspace over the UK and northern Europe.
Tim Atkinson, an airline risk consultant and former pilot, warned that sudden, unpredictable storms could simultaneously close or restrict all major London airports, potentially causing severe airspace congestion and risks such as aircraft running low on fuel while searching for open runways. However, other industry figures, including former airline executive Andrew Charlton, argue that the probability of such extreme scenarios remains low, expressing confidence in the aviation sector's ability to adapt and manage real-time weather challenges.
