Mobile gamers may soon experience graphics and frame rates previously reserved for high-end personal computers, as British chip designer Arm debuts its hardware-accelerated "neural graphics" suite. The technology makes its public debut in mainland China inside the Xiaomi 18 Fold smartphone, which features the new Arm Mali G2-Ultra NX graphics processor integrated into Xiaomi's custom Xring O3 silicon. The launch follows five years of internal development aimed at integrating dedicated artificial intelligence acceleration directly into mobile GPUs.

By adapting techniques popularized on PCs by Nvidia, Arm's Mali G2-Ultra NX enables hardware-assisted graphics features including AI super sampling, frame generation, and ray reconstructioncollectively branded as neural graphics. According to Arm, applying Neural Super Sampling, Neural Frame Rate Upscaling, and Neural Denoising simultaneously allows the system to render fewer actual pixels natively while leaning on AI to fill in the rest. Arm claims the combined suite can boost frame rates up to fourfold while operating within a tight power envelope of 2.5 watts for the entire handset, with just 1.5 watts allocated to the GPU.

The efficiency gains could significantly extend mobile gaming sessions. Chris Bergey, Arm’s executive vice president of edge AI, noted that where devices previously struggled to sustain high-performance gaming for more than 30 minutes without overheating or depleting batteries, handsets equipped with the new GPU could maintain 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second for up to three hours. Beyond flagship smartphones, Arm plans to roll out the neural graphics architecture across its broader lineup, bringing the capabilities to tablets, Chromebooks, and mainstream mobile devices starting next year.

However, the rollout will be gradual and requires active integration by game developers. Initial game releases will focus primarily on super sampling, with frame generation slated for early 2027 and neural denoising following shortly after. While developers using major engines like Unity and Unreal Engine will benefit from built-in support, individual titles must still implement the features. Where Winds Meet, Infinity Nikki, and Arena Breakout: Infinite are among the first titles confirmed to support Arm's graphics accelerator, with additional game announcements expected in the coming weeks.
