Northern England to Get New Battery-Powered Trains

Many passengers in northern England miss work or appointments when trains do not arrive. New battery-powered trains will replace old diesel trains to make travel more reliable.

A battery-powered train uses electricity stored in batteries instead of diesel fuel. These new trains will provide thousands of extra seats for passengers every day by the early to mid-2030s.

Travel times between cities will also become shorter. For example, trips between Manchester and Leeds will be up to 10 minutes faster. Trips between Manchester and York will save up to 14 minutes.
