Guanxin ward in Hsinchu City has reclaimed its title as Taiwan's wealthiest neighborhood, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday. The area, home to many professionals working in the nearby Hsinchu Science Park, recorded the highest average annual household income in the country for 2024.
According to the government's tax statistics, the average annual household income in Guanxin ward reached NT$4.592 million (US$143,873) in 2024. The neighborhood also led the nation in median household income, which stood at NT$3.434 million. A high median income suggests that wealth in Guanxin is distributed relatively evenly among its residents.
Guanxin had previously held the top spot but was temporarily overtaken in 2023 by Zhonghua ward in Taipei's Songshan District. In the 2024 rankings, Zhonghua ward dropped to third place, while Yongfu ward in Taipei's Shilin District took second place.
Although Yongfu and Zhonghua wards reported high average incomes, their median incomes were much lower at NT$732,000 and NT$993,000, respectively. Financial analysts note that a large difference between average and median incomes usually points to a wider wealth gap within a neighborhood, where a few extremely high earners raise the average.
The top five wealthiest neighborhoods in 2024 were all located in northern Taiwan. Dongping ward in Zhubei, Hsinchu County, took fourth place with an average household income of NT$3.436 million, followed by Longshan ward in Hsinchu City at NT$3.420 million. In total, eight neighborhoods in Taiwan recorded average incomes above NT$3 million, all of which are in Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, or Taipei.
Outside of northern Taiwan, Liantan ward in Tainan's Shanhua District posted the highest median income among special municipalities at NT$1.781 million. Liantan ward is located near the Tainan Science Park, which attracts many well-paid technology workers.
At the city and county level, Hsinchu City ranked first in average household income at NT$1.523 million, followed by Hsinchu County at NT$1.371 million, and Taipei at NT$1.336 million. Hsinchu City also had the highest average salary income at NT$1.154 million per household, while Taipei led in dividend income from investments at NT$385,000 per household.
The Ministry of Finance explained that these statistics are based on individual income tax filings for the 2024 fiscal year, which included about 6.98 million households. The ministry cautioned that the data does not include government subsidies or tax-exempt income, and should not be used as a direct measure of overall income inequality.
