A new tropical storm has formed in the Pacific Ocean. Its name is Tropical Storm Bavi. It was a tropical depression before it became stronger early Thursday.
The storm is east of Guam. This is still very far from Taiwan. It is about 4,266 kilometers southeast of Taiwan. Because it is far away, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA) does not know if it will affect Taiwan.
Tropical Storm Bavi is moving west-northwest at 19 kilometers per hour. The wind speed near the center of the storm is about 64.8 kilometers per hour. The gusts of wind are 90 kilometers per hour.
CWA forecaster Liu Yu-chi says the storm is moving west right now. A high-pressure system in the Pacific is steering the storm. It is expected to pass near Guam on Monday or Tuesday. Then, it will go toward the Ryukyu Islands. It will likely turn north after that.
We do not know the exact path of the storm yet. Its impact on Taiwan depends on where it goes in the second half of next week.
There is another tropical depression in the South China Sea. It might become a tropical storm on Thursday or Friday. It will be weaker than Bavi. It is forecast to move toward Guangdong and Guangxi provinces in China. It will not affect Taiwan.
