Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing Reform UK party, has resigned his seat in the British Parliament, triggering a special election in Clacton-on-Sea. But instead of facing opponents from the UK's main political parties, Farage is facing a challenger dressed as a giant garbage can: Count Binface.

Farage decided to resign after weeks of questions about his political funding. Parliament's watchdog is currently investigating a gift of more than $6 million from billionaire cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne. Farage also faced scrutiny for not declaring other benefits, such as private security and staff support, from his aide George Cottrell, who was previously found guilty of fraud in the United States. Farage denied breaking any rules but said he was tired of media questions and wanted voters to judge his actions.

In response to Farage's resignation, the UK's three main political parties—Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats—decided not to stand in the election. They described Farage's move as a "stunt" and a distraction. This decision left the spotlight on Count Binface.

Count Binface is played by Jon Harvey, a British comedian and satirist. Harvey has dressed up as the character to run against three different prime ministers over the past decade. He wears a silver cape and a giant gray trash can on his head, calling himself an "intergalactic space warrior from planet Sigma IX."

His unusual campaign proposals include nationalizing the famous singer Adele and moving a poorly positioned hand dryer in the men's toilet of a pub in Uxbridge. Despite the jokes, Harvey says his campaign has a deeper purpose: to show that British democracy is wonderful and unique. When asked why people in Clacton should vote for him, Count Binface gave a simple answer: "That I'm not Nigel Farage."

The UK has a long history of joke candidates who run in elections to make fun of serious politicians. The most famous group is the Monster Raving Loony Party, which was led for many years by Screaming Lord Sutch.
