A train crew in Ontario, Canada, narrowly escaped a dangerous wildfire as orange smoke and flames surrounded their train on July 13. The terrifying moment was captured on video from inside the train's cab, showing a bright orange glow and trees burning just a few feet away from the tracks.
The freight train, operated by Canadian National Railway (CN), was traveling near Armstrong in northern Ontario. In the video, the crew could be heard speaking urgently to a dispatcher, asking to move quickly before the fire overtook them. Fortunately, the railway company confirmed that all crew members were safely evacuated from the area. Following the close call, CN temporarily stopped train operations in the region.
At the same time, the massive amount of smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires has spread across the province. In Toronto, the smoke was so thick that the skies turned orange. Because of the heavy haze, Toronto recorded the worst air quality of any major city in the world on July 16. Local authorities are advising people to stay indoors as firefighters continue to battle the blazes.
