This allows Thomas to feel the texture and resistance of objects. For the first time in years, he has been able to hold his sister's hand and feel the fur of his pet dog.

The most astonishing discovery came when the research team had to temporarily halt the brain stimulation due to an unexpected fire in their building. Instead of losing the progress he had made, Thomas continued to show improvements in strength and sensation during the three months the device was turned off. Doctors believe this is due to neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganise itself and form new neural connections. By repeatedly using the device, Thomas's nervous system appears to have strengthened surviving nerve pathways that were previously too weak to transmit signals.
