Earth's vital communication lines with distant space probes face serious disruption after a fierce wildfire swept through one of NASA's primary deep-space tracking facilities in Spain.

sweep through= 掃過、襲擊(某區域)

Driven by extreme heat waves and severe drought across Europe, flames intensified on July 24 near Madrid, burning directly through the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex in Robledo de Chavela. Regional officials described the outbreak as the worst wildfire in the area's history, forcing immediate evacuations of the facility and surrounding communities. While all station personnel evacuated safely, emergency crews have not yet been able to assess the extent of the damage to the site's massive radio dish antennae.

The station plays a crucial role in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN), a global triad of ground stations—located in California, Spain, and Australia—that sends commands to spacecraft beyond Earth's orbit and receives their scientific data. The three facilities are geographically arranged so that at least two stations can track distant probes at any given time as the Earth rotates. Losing the Spanish site leaves significant coverage gaps during certain times of the day, leaving far-flung missions such as Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 temporarily out of reach.

so that ...= 以便於、使得

The incident comes at a challenging moment for space operations. The Deep Space Network is already heavily oversubscribed, causing delays in data downloads and transmission scheduling. With the Artemis lunar program expanding rapidly, demand for satellite bandwidth is higher than ever, raising fears that severe bottlenecks could permanently prevent some scientific data from reaching Earth.

prevent ... from -ing= 防止/阻礙……做某事

For now, NASA has temporarily shifted mission operations to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California to maintain uninterrupted service. However, experts warn that this temporary measure cannot fully compensate for a missing leg of the network if the Madrid antennae suffer lasting structural damage.
