Eating all daily meals within a nine-hour window and avoiding late-night snacks could offer a simple lifestyle strategy to help stave off cognitive decline in older age.
A pilot clinical trial conducted by researchers at Rutgers University suggests that timing mealtimes more strictly may provide cognitive advantages beyond the benefits of weight loss alone. The six-month study followed 47 women aged 50 to 79 living with overweight or obesity. All participants reduced their daily intake by 500 calories, but 26 of them were asked to limit their eating to a nine-hour window—typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.—while the remaining volunteers spread their meals over roughly 12 hours.
At the conclusion of the trial, both groups achieved an average weight loss of about 7 kilograms (15 pounds). However, standard cognitive assessments revealed notable differences: participants who confined their meals to the narrower timeframe performed significantly better on spatial planning and problem-solving tests. They also showed signs of making fewer errors during memory and learning evaluations, though both groups performed similarly on tests measuring multitasking and reaction times.
Lead researcher Prof. Sue Shapses described the cognitive gains as modest but promising, noting that time-restricted eating appears to enhance the ability to recall information necessary for everyday tasks. The preliminary findings were presented at Nutrition 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Maryland.
