A massive cosmic wanderer has caught the attention of astronomers after ripping apart a star far from the heart of its home galaxy. The discovery offers scientists their strongest evidence yet of an enormous wandering supermassive black hole drifting through deep space.
Every large galaxy typically hosts a supermassive black hole at its core. However, theoretical models have long suggested that galactic collisions can kick these cosmic giants away from their central positions. Now, researchers led by Robert Stein at the University of Maryland have identified the most extreme example of such a stray black hole ever observed.
The black hole revealed its presence when it devoured a star in a rare cosmic event known as a tidal disruption event (TDE). Designated as TDE 2025abcr, the flare of light was initially picked up by a machine learning algorithm analyzing data from the Zwicky Transient Facility in California. Follow-up observations with multiple telescopes confirmed that the burst took place more than 30,000 light-years away from the host galaxy's center—a distance greater than that between Earth's solar system and the center of the Milky Way.
Scientists believe wandering supermassive black holes are set adrift when two galaxies merge and gravitational forces fling one of the central black holes into outer regions. Tracking these rogue objects could provide crucial insights into how galaxies evolve and how frequently they collide. Researchers anticipate that new astronomical surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time at the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, will detect hundreds of similar wandering black holes in the coming years.
Despite the dramatic nature of the discovery, experts reassure that Earth is safe from such cosmic threats, as our sun is not part of the dense stellar clusters that typically travel alongside these wandering giants.
