Hundreds of thousands of residents and vacationers have been forced to flee their homes and campsites across southwestern Europe as aggressive wildfires continue to burn through parts of France and Spain. With temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C (104°F) in the coming days, an incoming heatwave threatens to break firefighters' fragile hold on several massive blazes.

be forced to V= 被迫做某事threaten to V= 有…的危險

In southwestern France, authorities ordered nearly 4,000 people to evacuate tourist sites around Lacanau on the Atlantic coast west of Bordeaux. The Gironde fire, which has burned an area four times the size of Paris and displaced 220,000 people, remains stabilized but vulnerable to fresh outbreaks as humidity drops. Firefighters have constructed over 100 kilometers of tactical firebreaks to prevent further spread. Meanwhile, in neighboring Landes, thousands of evacuees were permitted to return home after a separate blaze was contained, though officials cautioned that residual hot spots still require constant monitoring.

In Spain, the unprecedented disaster led the government to declare a national emergency for wildfires for the first time. More than 79,000 people have been evacuated nationwide, including over 56,000 residents in the Madrid region. Emergency crews continue battling the largest wildfire in Spain's recorded history in the province of Ávila, west of Madrid, where more than 50,000 hectares have been destroyed. Local officials described the volatile blazes as manageable during cool nights but fierce during hot afternoon hours.

The elevated fire risk extends into Portugal, where crews are tackling multiple active fronts in the eastern Guarda region under high alert level warnings. Following Western Europe's hottest June on record, dry vegetation and extreme weather continue to complicate firefighting efforts across the region, leaving holidaymakers and local communities waiting nervously for conditions to improve.
