A male jaguar in Brazil has surprised scientists by travelling more than 2,100 kilometres across the Amazon rainforest edge and farmland. The extraordinary trek far exceeds previous records for tagged jaguars and reveals surprising insights into how these big cats navigate changing environments.
Researchers fitted the eight-year-old jaguar, named Gaspar, with a GPS tracking collar in November 2024. Gaspar was part of an ongoing wildlife study along the Araguaia river, a corridor connecting the Cerrado grasslands with the Amazon rainforest. After spending time in his established 700-square-kilometre home range, Gaspar unexpectedly set off on a massive southward trek. Over the next year, his collar logged at least 2,122 kilometres as the crow flies, with his actual walking distance likely much higher.
Previously, the longest recorded dispersal for a tagged jaguar was only 60 to 100 kilometres. While young jaguars between one and three years old often travel short distances to find new territory, scientists are uncertain why an older adult like Gaspar undertook such a long journey. Experts suggest he may have been searching for better food resources, mating opportunities, or safer habitats.
Throughout his travel, Gaspar navigated through heavily modified human landscapes, including busy roads, ranches, and farms. Surprisingly, despite passing through suitable habitats for over a year, he never settled down to establish a new territory.
Gaspar's journey highlights serious challenges for wildlife conservation. Moving through farmland increases the risk of big cats being poached or killed by ranchers protecting their livestock. Gaspar's collar stopped transmitting data in late November 2025, leaving his current fate unknown. Whether his collar simply stopped working or he was killed, Gaspar's journey shows that wildlife managers may need to rethink how protected areas and corridors are designed to keep wide-ranging animals safe.
