People may soon interact with artificial intelligence through specialized gadgets rather than typing on screens. OpenAI president Greg Brockman has revealed that the company is currently developing a "family of devices" designed specifically for communicating with its AI models.
In an interview with technology journalist Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, Brockman explained that voice interaction will likely dominate computing in the near future. He predicted that users will shift to talking to computers for the vast majority of daily tasks, fundamentally changing how people interact with technology.
While recent rumors have pointed toward specific products—such as a smart speaker speculated for release in 2027 or a wearable device similar to the Humane AI pin—Brockman declined to confirm any particular product types. He also refrained from sharing a precise launch timeline, offering only that consumers can "expect them soon."
The hardware efforts continue despite an ongoing lawsuit filed by Apple against OpenAI. When asked if the legal dispute could affect the hardware OpenAI is designing in partnership with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, Brockman dismissed concerns. He stressed that OpenAI remains focused on its own internal technology and development, adding that the company has no interest in other companies' trade secrets.
Addressing the challenges of voice-first computing in shared spaces such as open offices, Brockman acknowledged the privacy and noise issues of speaking aloud to computers. He pointed to specialized products like soundproof "beak" masks, noting that while they may not be an ideal solution for everyone, their appearance demonstrates a clear market demand for private voice input.
Beyond hardware, Brockman noted that OpenAI is working to resolve privacy and trust concerns regarding its software models. The company is developing technological solutions to provide verifiable and auditable guarantees that user data—including conversations in ChatGPT's "temporary chat" mode—can only be reviewed by AI systems rather than human operators.
