With violent conflicts escalating across the globe and the United Nations Security Council frequently paralyzed by geopolitical rifts, the search for the world's chief diplomat has taken on heightened urgency. Seven candidates have officially entered the race to succeed António Guterres when his second term as UN Secretary-General concludes at the end of this year, setting off a high-stakes diplomatic contest in New York.

take on= 呈現、帶有(某種性質或重要性)

The selection process formally enters a decisive stage as the 15-member Security Council begins a series of secret straw polls to gauge candidate viability and narrow the field. Unlike past selectionstraditionally conducted behind closed doors in opaque bargaining sessions among the council’s five permanent members (the United States, China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom)—this year's contest has displayed unprecedented public visibility. Under the stewardship of UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, candidates recently participated in public interviews and a televised town hall debate to present their visions for the international body.

While the UN Charter provides minimal explicit guidance on selecting a Secretary-General, powerful unwritten norms shape the race. There is a strong expectation that candidate selection should follow an informal regional rotation, making it Latin America’s turn to hold the post. Furthermore, mounting international pressure advocates for electing the first woman to lead the global organization since its founding in 1945.

advocate for= 主張、提倡

Prominent contenders from Latin America include Rafael Grossi of Argentina, currently director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who emphasized his hands-on crisis management in negotiating safety ceasefires around Ukraine's imperiled nuclear power plants. Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, head of the UN Trade and Development body and former vice president, highlighted her role in brokering the Black Sea grain initiative to safeguard global food security during wartime. Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa are also competing, alongside former Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett.

Africa is represented by former Senegalese President Macky Sall and veteran Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu. Additional candidates may still enter the contest before a final decision is reached.

Navigating the deep geopolitical fault lines between the major powers will test every candidate. Former US diplomatic official Esther Brimmer noted concerns that the Security Council's veto-wielding members might settle on a lowest-common-denominator figure rather than a strong leader capable of overcoming global stalemate. For its part, the US State Department stated it seeks a leader focused strictly on peace and security rather than ideological agendas, while affirming it will not judge candidates solely on immutable characteristics.

Once the Security Council reaches a consensus or viable majority, it will submit a single nominee to the 193-member General Assembly for formal ratification, aiming to allow sufficient transition time before Guterres steps down on December 31.
