Scientists found that in sedentary rodents, restricting dietary protein to minimum recommended levels significantly extended lifespan and improved metabolic health.

According to Dudley Lamming, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, there is a widespread assumption that dietary protein is universally beneficial. However, evidence shows that when inactive animals consume protein beyond their baseline needs, it can lead to metabolic complications and a shorter lifespan. In one study, rats consuming the minimum daily requirement lived over 50 percent longernearly 120 days morethan those eating double that amount.

The benefits of protein restriction appear to stem from specific cellular mechanisms. Lower protein intake increases levels of FGF21, a hormone that lowers blood sugar and reduces senescent cells—aging cells that have stopped dividing and cause chronic inflammation. Additionally, restricting protein dampens the activity of mTORC1, a protein complex that drives cell growth. When mTORC1 activity drops, cells switch from a growth-focused state to a repair-oriented state, protecting against age-related decline.

However, experts caution against applying these findings directly to humans. Donald Layman, a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, points out that rodent metabolism differs substantially from human metabolism. Unlike lab animals, humans typically eat distinct meals rather than grazing continuously throughout the day, which alters how pathways like mTORC1 function. Furthermore, higher protein intake in older adults has been linked to crucial health benefits, such as preserving muscle mass and preventing frailty.

While active individuals still require adequate protein to repair muscle damage, researchers are exploring targeted alternatives for the general population. Philip Atherton at Nottingham University is planning human trials to test whether restricting specific amino acids—such as isoleucine and valine, commonly found in meat and dairy—can deliver the anti-aging benefits of protein restriction without requiring drastic dietary changes.
