Teenagers in the UK will soon be able to save more money on train travel after turning 18. Under new rules starting on August 17, 18-year-olds can continue using half-price rail passes.

be able to= 能夠〜

Currently, the "16-17 Saver" railcard stops working when a holder turns 18. This forced many young people to switch to a "16-25 Railcard," which gives only a 33% discount instead of 50%. The Department for Transport said the old rule meant over 70,000 students each year lost an average of £175 compared to classmates who had not yet turned 18.

instead of= 代替〜compared to= 與〜相比

Under the new policy, 17-year-olds can buy the 16-17 Saver card up until the day before their 18th birthday. The card will then remain valid for a full year, giving them 50% off most train fares until the day before they turn 19. The annual pass costs £35.

Government officials and student representatives welcomed the change. They said cheaper travel will help teenagers as they travel to college, begin job training, or enter the workplace.
