Norwegian champion Sigrid Haugset pulled off a stunning solo victory in stage three of the Tour de France Femmes, riding alone for 90 kilometers to win in Poligny and take the overall lead in the race.
The 27-year-old rider became the first Norwegian ever to wear the iconic yellow jersey in the women's Tour de France. She launched her attack at the base of the Col de la Savine climb, building a strong lead over the main peloton. Former world champion Lotte Kopecky chased hard and came within 10 seconds of Haugset, but the Norwegian held her off in suffocating heat reaching the high 30s. Haugset eventually crossed the finish line nearly a minute and a half ahead of her nearest rivals.
After the race, Haugset expressed her total disbelief at achieving the biggest victory of her career. "I never thought it was possible," she said, explaining that she was so exhausted at the finish line that she could not even lift her arms from her handlebars to celebrate.
Haugset now holds a lead of two minutes and two seconds over second-placed Kim Le Court in the overall standings. However, a 21-kilometer individual time trial looms next, a discipline where Haugset admits she has limited experience. Meanwhile, race organizers are also watching weather conditions closely, as high wildfire risks in southeastern France may force route changes for upcoming mountain stages.
