Staying clear of smoking, controlling blood pressure, and preventing diabetes during your mid-50s could grant more than a decade of healthy, dementia-free living.

stay clear of= 避免、遠離

Dementia affects millions of older adults worldwide, but the biological changes linked to the condition often begin decades before any symptoms appear. Medical experts have long known that smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes damage blood vessels and stir up brain inflammation, destroying neurons critical for memory and learning. However, new research highlights just how much cognitive time people can gain later in life by protecting their health during midlife.

According to a long-term study led by researchers at New York University, adults who avoided all three risk factors around age 56 gained an average of 12.6 dementia-free years compared to those who experienced all three conditions. The study tracked over 12,000 American adults for an average of 26 years. Participants who smoked and suffered from both diabetes and high blood pressure in middle age were 2.7 times more likely to develop dementia than those who avoided all three risks.

compared to= 與……相比

Even partial lifestyle improvements offer substantial benefits. Participants who eliminated one or two of the risk factors gained approximately four and eight additional years without dementia, respectively. Health experts note that accessible lifestyle habits, such as participating in regular physical exercise and limiting sugary foods, serve as key defenses against developing diabetes and high blood pressure.

serve as= 作為、充當

While the findings are promising, researchers also acknowledged several limitations. The study adjusted for factors like body mass index, physical activity level, and genetic markers such as the APOE gene variant, but it did not account for hearing loss or social isolation. Additionally, because the trial focused exclusively on US populations, individuals in other regions may experience different outcomes due to variations in environment and air pollution exposure. Nevertheless, taking active steps to protect cardiovascular and metabolic health in midlife remains a powerful strategy for safeguarding memory into old age.
